The match between Portuguese champions Porto and Maccabi Tel Aviv was abandoned in the 68th minute when Israel’s veteran defender Tal Ben Haim was red-carded in a scuffle with the referee.

The Israeli played his 120th and final game for the club, having made 685 appearances.

Covid, 28, was shown his second yellow card for throwing a water bottle on to the pitch.

With eight minutes to go, he and the fourth official clashed in the technical area.

Porto led 3-1 in the first leg in Portugal, although they then lost the second leg 2-1.

A decision about the result will be made in the next 48 hours, although Israel’s national football federation said Porto had already advanced to the last 16.

For Ramos, the sending-off is a result of an “adverse position”, said vice-president of the Israel Football Association Miri Biran.

“The football in Jerusalem is dangerous. Football should be brought to the streets – it’s not suitable for stadiums,” he said.

A disciplinary hearing will now be held against the Israeli national football association.

Meanwhile, Porto are expected to name Real Madrid boss Santiago Solari as their new manager on Thursday.
