Rialto, CA (USA): A gunman opened fire on a bus carrying San Bernardino County social workers in an attempted murder-suicide on Thursday, wounding three people before being shot dead by police, authorities said.

All three victims had non-life-threatening injuries and one of them was taken to hospital in critical condition, but then upgraded to good condition, police and the coroner’s office said.

Police responded to a 911 call about a man trying to kill people on a bus in Rialto, a city of about 100,000 residents about 30 miles east of Los Angeles, police Sergeant Gregg Brandt said.

The motive was not clear, and officers had not made contact with the gunman after the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 am (1630 GMT), Brandt said.

“He tried to open fire. You know, he said something to the effect of, ‘I’m going to kill you all, and I’m going to take your children, and I want to go home, and I want to kill myself.'” Jim McConville, who said he was in the bus when the shooting happened, told KABC-TV.

Police had earlier said two adults and a child had been wounded and a second person died at the scene. All four people were armed with handguns, police said.
